The artist will be giving free still life demos on 14, 15, 21 and 22nd Nov from 11am to 1pm.
DETAILS The exhibition will showcase work done to date by Alvin Mark Tan, a professional artist and former student at The Angel Academy of Art in Florence, Italy. The Academy is co-founded by Michael John Angel, an Art Renewal Center (ARC) Living Master™ who was a student of the renowned Italian Maestro Pietro Annigoni in the 1960s who taught him the techniques that were passed down from the time of the old masters like Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Velázquez, Bouguereau, Sargent and their contemporaries. Maestro John Angel spent over 40 years developing a programme based on techniques and methods developed in the 19th-century French Academies.
The artist aims, in line with the goals of the ARC, to create awareness of a long forgotten tradition in Art, specifically natural realism. The quality of Art has suffered a sharp decline in the recent decades around the world and it began when the French impressionists rebelled against the French Académie des Beaux-Arts during the late 19th century. Their idea of aesthetic relativism: where beauty is in the eye of the beholder, meant that the tenet of “if I think it’s good, then it is good” made a universal standard of quality, honed over two millennia, worth almost nothing.
The artist hopes the exhibition will continue to open the doors to this universal standard of quality for a Singaporean audience. The human figure is central to European art – the innate urge towards anthropomorphism depends on it for expression and many principles of composition stem from a study of the nude.
THE ARTIST Singaporean-born Alvin Mark Tan is an artist living in Florence, Italy. A graphic design graduate from Woodbury University in Burbank, California, Alvin began his design career for Public Affairs in the Ministry of Defence in Singapore. Later, in the Marketing Division of Singapore Press Holdings, he branched out into branding and advertising, environmental design and documentary-production.
Alvin also has an Animation diploma, with a focus in concept art. He graduated this past summer from the Angel Academy of Art in Florence, Italy after a three year intensive programme, and continues to live and study there. He aspires to paint like the Old Masters and to hand down this tradition of realist art.
Alvin loves capturing life and beauty directly from nature, so he is often outdoors doing plein-air or on the streets urban-sketching when the weather permits. His goal is to inspire people to live fuller lives through his art and publications; ‘Thirty Days on The Camino’, a sketchbook journal recording his pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago in Spain; and ‘Ciao Firenze!’, a compilation his sketches of his current city of residence, Florence, Italy.
Alvin is using this time at the exhibition in Singapore to create awareness of his art and raise funds to his further studies.
